Among Others – Final Impressions | Quick Review

Among OthersAmong Others by Jo Walton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As I said briefly before, this book has that particular sort of pacing I have a hard time with. It’s excellently written and it draws me in completely while I’m reading it. I do not want to put it down. But if I put it down, I have a hard time picking it back up again. I have begun to think that it has something to do with the intensity of it all.

About the ending, so potentially light spoilers:

The ending seemed to resolve too fast, though it resolved completely appropriately. It felt like, where the rest of the book was taking its time, the ending was rushing and tumbling forward to the resolution. But it was a resolution, and an excellent, appropriate one. It was the final demonstration of the character growth — the character growth that had occurred so subtly during the rest of the narrative that I hardly even noticed it until the pieces fell together at the end. And it didn’t go where I thought it would at all, which is excellent as well, since I’m rarely surprised by these things anymore.
